Summit Speaker Series: Elizabeth Bettencourt, RN, MSN, OCN

The 2016 Nevada Cancer Control Summit brings together expert speakers from throughout the region to discuss the latest topics in cancer control. In the months leading up to this year’s Summit, scheduled for September 15 at Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, join us to learn more about our roster of speakers.

We kick off the Summit Speaker Series highlighting Elizabeth Bettencourt, RN, MSN, OCN, presenting the session on Recommendations for Patient Adherence with Oral Chemotherapy. In this session Ms. Bettencourt will discuss the reasons behind patient over- and under-adherence to oral agents, side-effect management, reimbursement and cost concerns, and identify ways to educate patients about the efficacy of compliance to oral chemotherapy agents.

Ms. Bettencourt currently serves as the sole oral chemotherapy nurse navigator working with seven oncologists, where she connects with all of the patients prescribed oral chemotherapy to provide specific drug education, assistance with drug access, and adherence and monitoring follow-up throughout the entire course of treatment. She has held this position for the past five years of her more than two-decade career at Palo Alto Medical Foundation (now part of Sutter Health). Her additional roles have included infusion nurse, infusion charge RN, and back office nurse.

As an active member of Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Ms. Bettencourt collaborated with ONS in 2015 to update a portion of their Oral Chemotherapy online course. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Oral Chemotherapy Committee of the American Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) and in 2014 was published in the Nov/Dec issue of ACCC’s Oncology Issues with the article “Oral Chemotherapy: What your patients need to know.”
