Summit Speaker Series: Michael Hackett
08 August, 2016
The 2016 Nevada Cancer Control Summit brings together expert speakers from throughout the region to discuss the latest topics in cancer control. In the months leading up to this year’s Summit, scheduled for September 15 at Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, join us to learn more about our roster of speakers.
How does local and state policy affect your work, and is there anything you can do about it? The answers to that are: perhaps more than you think and yes. The 2017 Nevada legislative session is just around the corner and will likely include a number of bills that will have a real impact on health care and cancer in Nevada. Policy expert and lobbyist Michael Hackett, principal of Reno-based Alrus Consulting, will help you understand the potential factors that impact health care policy in our state, how you can actively participate in the legislative process, and share resources to stay abreast of current health care policy issues. He’ll also review bills that are likely to come before the legislature in the upcoming session.
Michael has been involved in healthcare-related issues since joining Alrus in 2000, representing medical associations, public health advocates, the non-profit community, and other stakeholders, including the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and the International Myeloma Foundation.
Since 2005, Michael has worked with the Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition (NTPC), where he sits on their Board of Directors and serves as Policy Chair. He has represented NTPC before the Nevada State Legislature since 2007. Michael was campaign manager for the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act statewide ballot initiative in 2006, also defeating a competing ballot initiative by tobacco industry proponents. He was also part of the campaign team that passed a statewide initiative to enact medical malpractice reform in 2004.
Michael also sits on the board of directors for Nevada Advocates for Planned Parenthood Affiliates, and the Great Basin Outdoor School. He is also a member of the Legislative Council for Las Vegas HEALS (Health, Education, Advocacy, Leadership of Southern Nevada).
