Sun Smart Schools Wraps a Successful 2017
12 December, 2017
Sun Smart Schools, NCC's signature skin cancer prevention program for Nevada's students, kicked off its second year of programming in the 2016-17 school year by expanding from seven pilot schools to 22 participating schools. Students in pre-K through 12th grade in public, private, and parochial schools all participated in the program with the support of teachers, nurses, and school and district administration.
Some of the past year's successes include:
- 55 sunscreen dispensers installed in schools
- 116,000 milliters of sunscreen distributed to students
- Positive increases in sun safety knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among students
In August at the 2017 CDC National Cancer Conference, we learned that Nevada’s Sun Smart Schools program is one of the most creative and progressive skin cancer prevention programs across the nation. Other states are taking similar steps and we were thrilled to share information about Nevada’s Sun Smart progress with so many others.
Sun Smart Schools was also featured as a Community Case Study in the CDC's Preventing Chronic Disease journal, published Nov. 30, 2017. The paper includes details on the program along with an interview on the PCD Sound Bites Podcast.
